The Truth About Feminism

Feminism. It all began at the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 when three hundred men and women rallied to the cause of equality for women. And still, today, feminism remains as advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes is still imperative.

First off - what is Feminism? Let me begin by saying that, all too often, people believe that feminism is ‘all too much and that ‘all they do is male-bash', yet they still claim that they believe in equal rights for all genders. What I find most funny about this is - that is the whole goal of feminism! It is not to belittle men or remove the rights of other groups, but simply to ensure that BOTH sexes have equal rights regarding political, economic, personal, and social equality.

Thousands of women have finally found their voice in this movement. Feminism has given us the ability and courage to stand up for ourselves whenever we’re pushed into a questionable situation. When we stand up for our rights, we don’t just stand up for a specific gender. Instead, we throw our fists in the air for whoever has been treated unfairly. And this is for both sexes.

Another common stigma - that feminism is no longer needed or relevant today. Sure, society has changed heaps over the course of the years, and strides have been made towards equality. However, women STILL remain far from equal both in the Western world and globally. Feminism remains as important an issue today for contemporary women as it did in the past. There are still hundreds of hidden stigmas, stereotypes and sexism towards women - from the pay gap all through to domestic and sexual violence. And we must stand together to ensure an equal and just society.
